Organization Consideration

Thursday, June 10, 2010

We were at a toy store yesterday, shopping around for bikes and bike accessories for upcoming birthdays.  After we finished up, we wandered around and came to a section of the store that had crib furniture, children's table and chair sets, toy boxes, tents, etc.  My son walked up to a large plastic toy bin and lifted the lid.  He looked inside for a moment, then shut the lid.  He looked up at me and said "Look Mama, a trash can!"  Hmmmm, wow.  Yet another reason I like having less toys (instead of a bin full), and placing the ones that we do have in their own place on a bookshelf or small container on a shelf.  If you just throw everything on top of each other, how will they even know what they have?  And imagine the giant mess they have to create just to see what is at the bottom?  Plus, I figure if it resembles a trash can to a child, how important will they think the items stored in the bin are to begin with?  How much will they take care of those items?  Please don't get me wrong: Is our room always spotless?  Um, no.  BUT, it is always organized before bedtime (we wake up to a clean room), and it makes cleanup much quicker throughout the day if we can quickly spot what is out of place on the floor and find the item's home again.  Just something to consider in case you were deciding between purchasing shelving or a large toy bin for your child's room or playroom.
Funny quote of the day to leave you with:
{a fragment of a conversation between
my 3 year old son & my husband}

My Son: "I can't wear these socks for soccer!"
My Husband: "Can you wear them for swimming?"
My Son: "No, they'd get wet!"
My Husband: "Can you wear them for driving a race car?"
My Son: "No! They don't know how to drive!"

Such a cute quote:) I have to admit that I have the bins and I'm not so organized, but Emma is always told to clean up after playing and I am dragged off by her to inspect:)
