I've been taking a break (as you may have noticed). Not only from posting, but from reading, and generally doing online. I've closed my Etsy shop for a while, and I have just felt the need to distance myself from as much electronic communication for a while. But, I've had some great finds to share with you, and didn't want to wait, so here they are!

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds
When you're carving your Halloween pumpkins, don't throw away the seeds!
Have more seeds than you know what to do with? Substitute pumpkin seeds for peanuts in your favorite peanut brittle recipe.
Toasted and salted, pumpkin seeds have a nutty flavor. They're even better flavored with sweet and savory spices.
How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds
1. Rinse pumpkin seeds under cold water and pick out the pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you've removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp has dried.)
2. Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil and coat with non-stick cooking spray.
3. Sprinkle with salt and bake at 325 degrees F until toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring after 10 minutes.
4. Let cool and store in an air-tight container.

To use for Apple Pattern Making
You can have the children create their own patterns, or model after yours with their own apples or unifex cubes.

Print out, laminate, then hole punch and let child lace with yarn or a shoelace.
You may want to color in the apples before laminating for more visual interest.
Pumpkin Patch Alphabet Game
This is an Alphabet Order Game for children to work on learning the correct order of the letters. Cut out
the individual pumpkin patch for each sequence and mount to a file folder. Use the individual pumpkins
for playing pieces and help children find the correct patch.
Even/Odd Pumpkin Sorting
Children separate the pumpkins into
two different hay carts, one for the even pumpkins, and one for the odd pumpkins.
Pumpkin Patch Phonics
This is a game for children working on early phonics skills. Children read the word combinations on each pumpkin and decide if it belongs in the Word Patch, or the Non Word Patch.
Match the capital letter to the lower case letter.
Cards showing a photo and name of many different varities of Apples.
Great to use with a muffin tin pan! Put counters of any variety (beans, seasonal erasers or wooden chips, etc.) into the first tin. Select a number card and place in each of the remaining tin spaces. Have child count out the number of counters that belong in that space. (See photo below).
This activity will help your child gain experience in measurement by using a non-standard measuring tool.

Leaf Patterns
This activity will help your child begin to recognize, describe and extend patterns.
Print off several copies and create your own pattern strips for you child to model and continue the pattern.

Pumpkin Pie Playdough Recipe
(NOT FOR EATING)
5 ½ cups flour
2 cups salt
8 teaspoons cream of tartar
¾ cup oil
1.12 ounce container of pumpkin pie spice
Orange food coloring (2 parts yellow, 1 part red)
4 cups water
Mix all of the ingredients together. Cook and stir over medium heat until all the lumps disappear. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth. Store in an airtight container.
